Moving to Germany as a European Student

Securing your admission letter to an elite business school is an exciting milestone. If you hold citizenship in a European Union (EU) member state, an EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), or Switzerland, you enjoy a massive advantage: freedom of movement.

Unlike non-EU applicants, you do not have to navigate a stressful student visa process for Germany, face long consulate wait times, or lock thousands of euros into a restrictive blocked account. You have the legal right to enter, study, and launch a marketing career in Germany with minimal bureaucratic hurdles.

However, moving your life to a new country still requires completing specific administrative milestones to legalize your residency, secure your healthcare, and ensure a smooth transition into the Master in International Marketing and Sales (IMS) program at FH Muenster. This guide outlines your essential European checklist.

1. The Legal Framework: Freedom of Movement for Students

As an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, you do not need to apply for a German student visa or a residence permit. You can simply pack your bags, book your travel, and move directly to Münster.

Under EU law, your right to reside as a student is guaranteed as long as you fulfill two basic criteria:

  • You are enrolled at an accredited institution like FH Münster for the purpose of study or vocational training.
  • You have sufficient financial resources to ensure you do not become a burden on the German social welfare system. As a European student, you do not need to open a German blocked account (Sperrkonto); a formal self-declaration or simple proof of parental support, savings, or a scholarship is entirely sufficient.

2. Post-Arrival Milestone: The Address Registration (Anmeldung)

While you do not need a visa, you are legally required to register your physical address once you arrive in Münster. This process is called Anmeldung and must be completed within 14 days of moving into your new accommodation.

What You Need for Your Appointment:

To complete your registration at the Münster Citizens' Office (Bürgerbüro), you must present:

  1. Valid National ID Card or Passport: Must be valid for the duration of your stay.
  2. Confirmation of Moving In (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung): A specific form filled out and signed by your local landlord or main tenant confirming that you have officially moved into the apartment or shared flat (WG). A standard rental contract alone is usually not sufficient.
  3. Letter of Admission / Enrollment Certificate: Your official documentation from the International Marketing and Sales (IMS) program showing your student status.

Completing your registration (Anmeldung) is the master key to your life in Germany. It generates your official registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), which you will need to open a local bank account, set up a mobile contract, and obtain your German tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer).

3. Healthcare for European Students: The EHIC Advantage

One of the greatest perks of being an EU student in Germany is the seamless integration of health insurance networks. You do not need to purchase private German travel insurance or expensive student plans.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

If you hold statutory health insurance in your home country, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Temporary Replacement Certificate.

  • How it Works: Your EHIC grants you access to necessary state-provided medical treatment in Germany under the same conditions and at the same cost as domestic students.
  • The Digital Recognition Step: Before you can officially enroll at FH Münster, you must contact a German statutory health insurance provider (such as TK, AOK, or Barmer) online. They will digitally verify your EHIC and send an electronic notification (Meldung) directly to the university confirming that your insurance requirements are satisfied. This service is entirely free.

4. The European Student Relocation Workflow

To ensure a seamless transition to the Münster School of Business, execute your relocation steps in this logical sequence:

1.Secure Admission & Housing: Immediate.Receive your official IMS acceptance letter and begin searching for a shared apartment (WG) or student residence in Münster.

2.Notify Home Insurer: 2 weeks before departure.Ensure your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid for the upcoming academic year and request a digital validation from a German statutory health fund.

3.Complete Address Registration: Within 14 days of arrival.Attend your pre-booked appointment at the Münster Bürgerbüro with your Wohnungsgeberbestätigung to receive your Meldebescheinigung.

4.Finalize Enrollment & Student Ticket: First month on campus.Pay your semester fee to unlock your Deutschland-Semesterticket, granting you free, unlimited rail and bus travel across the country.

Working in Germany as an EU Student

Another major structural benefit for European students is the unrestricted right to work. Unlike international students from outside Europe who face strict day limits, EU/EEA citizens enjoy complete access to the German job market.

You can take up a working student position (Werkstudent) in a digital marketing or account management role to offset your living expenses in Germany. To maintain your student status regarding social security contributions, you simply need to adhere to the standard rule of working no more than 20 hours per week during regular semester terms (unrestricted hours apply during lecture-free breaks).

By leveraging your European mobility rights, the transition to FH Münster becomes a streamlined, cost-effective pathway to an advanced Master of Arts and an elite corporate network in Germany.
